Affected areas include: Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Eerste River, Somerset West, Mitchells Plain and Citrusdal, among others, according to the department.

Provincial health spokesperson Monique Johnstone said clinics are also managing cases of diphtheria in parts of the Cape Metro. She warned that a decline in routine childhood vaccinations is placing many children at serious risk.

‘Our clinics will remain open throughout the festive period. Targeted vaccination outreaches are underway in these affected areas. Measles and diphtheria can be severe, but they are preventable,’ Johnstone said.

She added that all vaccines are provided free of charge at public health facilities, including catch up doses for children who missed earlier vaccinations.

Health officials are urging families to use the school holidays to visit their nearest clinic. Increased travel and social gatherings during this period can accelerate the spread of infectious diseases, especially in densely populated communities.

‘Protect your child and your community this holiday season. Visit your nearest clinic and make sure your child’s vaccines are up to date,’ Johnstone told the SABC said.

The department continues to monitor the situation closely and will adjust response plans where needed.
